Description

A highly decorative map of map of Pembrokeshire, engraved by Jodocus Hondius for John Speed's county atlas, the 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain'. It is decorated with large strapwork cartouches for the title and inset plans of Pembroke and Saint Davids, and eleven armorials. This example comes the Latin edition of 1616, the only non-English edition of Speed's Theatre, produced for the Continental market. Its lack of success makes it comparatively scarce: it was only after 1918 that the British Museum obtained a complete Latin volume.
