Description

Both prospects of Bristol from the brothers Samuel and Nathaniel Buck's series of 83 large views of the 'Cities, Sea-ports and Capital Towns' of England and Wales, a project that occupied them from 1728 until 1753. Ths south east view is taken from Totterdown, with Clifton Gorge on the left, with staffage including a black page boy, alluding to the city's slave trade. Underneath is an extensive descriptive text and a 29-point key. The north west prospect is from Brandon Hill, before the creation of the ornamental garden and the building of Cabot Tower on the summit, with washermen exercising their right to lay out linen to dry. The 31-point key lists churches and factories (including Abraham Darby's Baptist Mills Brass Works), schools (including slaver-trader Edward Colston's ''Colson's Hospital for 100 Boys''), Queens's Square (the first residential square outside London) and the Ropery by the side of the river Froom.
