Description

A map of the old province of North Zhili (Beizhili), with the Great Wall of China running across the top. It was published in the 'Novus Atlas Sinensis', the first Western atlas of China, which contained maps supplied by Martino Martini, the Jesuit missionary who travelled through China 1643-1650. The large title cartouche features the Emperor and Empress and two exotic Chinese pheasants.
