Description

A rare miniature town plan of Nicosia, highlighting the defensive walls, published in 'Raccolta di le piu illustri et famose Città di tutto il Mondo'. Of the 322 plans in this series, 112 are signed by Valegio as this map, six were reissues of plates engraved by Martin Rota in 1572, and the rest were anonymous. This is one of the few not based on Braun & Hogenberg: it is based on Camocio's plan of the Siege of Nicosia by the Turks in 1570, although with the military vignettes removed. This plan is more commonly seen in the later 1713 'Universus terrarum orbis' by Raphael Savonarola (also known as Alphonso Lasor a Varea).
