Description
A very close copy of the sixth woodcut in Albrecht Dürer's series of 15 scenes of the Apocalypse of 1498, famed for his depiction of the Four Horsemen. This block shows the Martyrs' calls for retribution against their persecutors and the unleashing of Divine Vengence in the form of flaming stars.
The block was cut by Hieronymus Greff of Frankfurt (1460-post 1525): other than the replacement of Dürer's monogram 'AD' with 'IVF' ('Ieronimus von Frankfurt') with a cross, the two blocks need close inspection to be told apart.
