Description

An unusual composite pocket atlas, with maps engraved between 1747 and c.1770, and first issued singly as illustrations for a yearly almanac. Thus the publishers are Arent van Huissteen (d.1751), Gerard van Huissteen (son?) and van Esvelt, who started issuing the maps c.1765. The maps are the world and four continents, the rest European countries. In his 'Miniature Antique Maps' Geoffrey King dates a 24-map atlas to c.1770, with a 29-map atlas to c.1775.

Condition:

Old innk ownsership inscription on preliminary; ink spots on Europe, hole in border of America, British Isles map with split at centre fold.
