Description
A diagram illustrating the speed of the Earth, Venus and Mercury to circle the sun in the year 1710. Earth took the whole of 1710, Venus eight months and Mercury three months. An allegorical vignette depicts the sun as a ball with a putti sitting astride it; Earth is a woman in a carriage with four putti, drawn by a team of six horses; Venus is in a shell-like chariot drawn by two swans; and Mercury uses his winged heels to run ahead.
From Doppelmayr's 'Atlas coelestis in quo mundus spectabilis et in eodem.'
