Description

A detailed map of the Southern Hemisphere, engraved by John Duff for the Dublin edition of the Official Account of Cook's Second Voyage (1772-75), in which he was to circumnavigate the world as far south as possible in an attempt to find the Great Southern Continent. Also marked on the chart are his route on his First Voyage and those of other explorers. Although he proved that the 'Terra Australis Incognita' was a myth, Cook predicted that an Antarctic land would be found beyond the ice barrier.
