Description

A naval battle scene depicting hand-to-hand fighting during the Battle of Lepanto, over a map of the Gulf of Corinth, with the League receiving divine aid from the Roman gods above and an allegorical figure of Christian Faith bottom left. Giovanni Battista de' Cavalieri (c.1525-1601) worked as an engraver and publisher, first in Venice and in Rome from 1559. He engraved this plate in 1572, but this example was published in Girolamo Catena's ''Vita del Gloriosissimo Papa Pio V'', the first time it was included despite the book being first issed in 1586.

Condition:

Original binding folds, a few minor creases. Evidence of damage to the printing plate: the bottom left corner of plate rounded off and crack in top right.
